SolidWorks PDM is a widely used PDM system. If you pay for SolidWorks Professional or Premium, PDM Standard is already included. There is no separate purchase to justify, and for most teams it does the job for years.

The teams who start looking around are usually the ones whose requirements grew. A second CAD tool after an acquisition, engineering spread across two sites, a formal change order process someone in quality finally asked for. Sometimes nothing broke at all, and the tool has simply started to feel a generation behind everything else the team uses.

This is what teams at that point actually evaluate, including Dassault's own products, and what each path involves.

What SolidWorks PDM does well

It is worth being clear about this before anyone starts a migration.

The SolidWorks integration is as deep as file-based PDM gets. Parts, assemblies, drawings, and their references are tracked as one connected set. Where-used and contains are reliable. Data cards drive revision blocks in the title block. Configurations survive. That is not a small thing, and no cloud platform replicates it by reading STEP files.

PDM Standard costs nothing extra for CAD users. If you are on SolidWorks Professional or Premium subscription, the CAD Editor seats are included. For a five-person team that never leaves the building, this is difficult to beat on price.

The reseller network is mature. Most SolidWorks resellers have people who have set up PDM dozens of times, and they are usually local to you.

And it runs entirely on your own infrastructure. For teams under export control or a customer security clause that forbids third-party hosting, that is the requirement, not the drawback.

Dassault positions Standard for "smaller, single site companies that need simple data management capabilities," and that description is accurate. If that is you, and someone in IT already runs Windows Server and SQL, stay where you are. The rest of this article is for teams where one of those things stopped being true.

What pushes teams out

A second CAD tool arrived. SolidWorks PDM will store a Creo part or an Altium project. It will not understand them. References, where-used and BOM structure work properly for SolidWorks and roughly at best for everything else. Nobody plans this. It arrives with an acquisition, a first electrical engineer, or a customer who mandates NX. Now the vault is the source of truth for mechanical, a shared drive is the source of truth for the rest, and the BOM is assembled by hand in Excel.

Somebody owns the server, forever. An archive server, a SQL database, a backup routine, and an upgrade every year that has to match the client on every workstation. Dassault's installation guide is explicit that a Standard vault "must be hosted on SQL Server Express," which Microsoft caps at 10 GB. That ceiling is invisible until the day it is not. Teams rarely phrase any of this as a software complaint. They phrase it as "the person who set this up left."

People stopped being in the building. The browser client and the API server are both Professional only, so on Standard the vault means a Windows machine on the network. Everyone else is on VPN, and checking out a 400 MB assembly over VPN is slow enough that people start keeping local copies instead.

The tier ceiling. Dassault's own product matrix puts multiple automated workflows, automatic PDF and STEP output, serial numbers, ERP import and export and content search under Professional. So quality asks for a change order process with two approval paths, and the answer is not a setting. It is Professional licenses, a SQL Server license and a setup engagement, with SolidWorks Manage on top if you want real BOM management. A process request becomes a purchase order.

And sometimes it just feels dated. Not everyone leaves because something broke. The client is a Windows desktop app, search is a dialog box, and sharing outside the vault means an export and an email. New engineers ask why there is no link they can send. That sounds like taste, but adoption is what makes a PDM system work: a tool people avoid quietly stops being the source of truth, and the vault ends up holding last month's version.

This isn't a complete list. Every team has its own version of the moment it started looking. What follows is what they evaluate once they get there.

SolidWorks PDM Professional

More than one approval workflow, and the ability to automate them. Automatic PDF and STEP files on release. Serial numbers generated for you. Import and export to your ERP system. Search inside document contents. A browser client, so people can reach the vault without the desktop app. Copies of the vault kept in sync between offices. And full SQL Server underneath instead of Express.

Dassault does not publish list pricing for PDM. You can buy a SolidWorks design license online now, but PDM sits in the wider portfolio that Dassault points you to a reseller partner for. So the only real number is your quote. Three things belong in it that teams routinely leave out: the SQL Server license, which is not included, the setup work, and training. Ask for a first-year total rather than a per-seat figure, and ask what it renews at in year two.

Where it is the wrong answer: when the actual complaint is that you are running a server at all. Professional is a bigger, more capable version of the same architecture. If the trigger was your IT person leaving, this does not solve it.

SolidWorks Manage

The PLM layer that sits on top of PDM Professional. Project management, resource planning, item and BOM management across CAD and non-CAD data, dashboards.

Where it is the wrong answer: it requires PDM Professional underneath, so it adds a tier rather than replacing one. If your BOM lives half in PDM and half in ERP today, Manage is a real answer. If you were hoping to reduce the number of systems, it is not.

3DEXPERIENCE Cloud PDM and Collaborative Designer for SolidWorks

Dassault's cloud platform. No archive server, no SQL, no VPN. Data is managed as connected objects rather than files. There are connectors for CATIA, NX, Creo, AutoCAD and Altium alongside SolidWorks. The desktop SolidWorks you already run connects through an add-in.

This is the closest thing to a like-for-like cloud replacement from the incumbent, and for teams committed to Dassault it deserves a serious look.

The tradeoffs are real. The platform has its own vocabulary and its own learning curve. It stores data differently, so moving your vault across is a conversion project, not a copy. Licensing is role-based, so seats accumulate across Collaborative Business Innovator, the SolidWorks connector and whatever else you need. Pricing is not published and goes through a reseller.

Where it is the wrong answer: when you want a contained change. This is a platform decision, and it should be evaluated as one.

Leaving Dassault

Bild

Cloud-native PDM and PLM for mechanical and multidisciplinary hardware teams. Engineers work in a desktop app or a browser. No vault server, no SQL database, no VPN.

For a SolidWorks team the thing that matters is multi-CAD. One system handles SolidWorks, Inventor, NX, Creo, Solid Edge, AutoCAD, Revit and Altium, plus STEP and STL, rather than one system per tool. Version control counts metadata edits, renames and moves as versions in their own right, not only file saves, which is where a lot of PDM systems quietly lose history. BOMs come off the assembly structure and sync both directions. Change orders route to named reviewers, which is the request that PDM Standard cannot answer without a tier upgrade. Suppliers get a scoped portal showing current drawings and nothing else.

Published pricing is $600 a month on Basic and $1,500 a month on Professional with annual billing. Go-live runs 3 to 10 days, compared to the 3 to 9 months typical of legacy PLM.

Where it is the wrong answer: SolidWorks-only and staying that way, in which case the multi-CAD argument does not apply to you and PDM's native integration is deeper. Automotive-scale configuration management and variant handling, where Teamcenter and Windchill genuinely do things Bild does not. And if the whole point is staying with Dassault, 3DEXPERIENCE is the more sensible move and we would rather you knew that now than after a trial.

Arena

Cloud PLM, now part of PTC, is strong in regulated hardware and long established in medical devices and electronics. Item-centric BOM, change management, quality records, supplier collaboration.

Where it is the wrong answer: Arena is PLM, not PDM. It manages items, revisions, and changes, not check-out and check-in of live CAD. Teams typically run it alongside a PDM system, so if the goal was to reduce the number of systems, this does not do it. Pricing is not published.

Duro

Cloud PLM aimed at smaller hardware teams, with a strong story in aerospace and defense and a genuinely usable BOM and part numbering model.

Where it is the wrong answer: same structural point as Arena. It is a PLM layer, and CAD file management is handled through integrations rather than as the core of the product. Pricing is not published.

OpenBOM

The lightest option here, and the cheapest to try. BOM management, part catalogs, purchasing, with CAD add-ins for SolidWorks and others.

Published pricing is $30 per seat per month on the Team plan, billed yearly. The Company plan is $90 and adds CAD file management, revision control, and change management. The CAD add-in is $25 per seat per month on top. Read-only users are unlimited.

Where it is the wrong answer: it is a BOM-first tool that grew PDM features, rather than a PDM system. If your primary pain is check-in and check-out discipline across a fifteen-person engineering team, this is not the shape of the answer. If your primary pain is that the BOM lives in Excel, it might be exactly right.

Siemens Teamcenter and PTC Windchill

The big enterprise PLM systems. Some teams need to manage hundreds of product variants, track which change applies to which build, and tie all of it into systems the rest of the company already runs. At that scale, these two do things nothing else on this list does.

Where it is the wrong answer: cost, timeline, and administrative load. Implementations are measured in quarters, not weeks, and typically require dedicated internal ownership. Pricing is not published and is negotiated. For a 30-person engineering team, this is almost always more system than the problem calls for.

Onshape

A different kind of answer, because it replaces the CAD seat as well as the vault. Cloud-native CAD with data management built into the same database, so there is no separate PDM to administer and no check-out and check-in in the traditional sense.

Published pricing is $1,500 per user per year on Standard and $2,500 on Professional, which adds advanced PDM and release management. Onshape Government runs on AWS GovCloud with FIPS 140-3 cryptography for regulated work.

Where it is the wrong answer: your team knows SolidWorks, your suppliers expect SolidWorks files, and your legacy library is SolidWorks. Moving CAD to solve a data management problem is a large change to make for that reason alone. Evaluate it when you were already questioning the CAD seat.

The question that actually blocks these migrations

For aerospace, defense and anyone with an export-controlled program, the blocker is not features. It is ITAR and EAR.

You have to be able to demonstrate three things. Technical data is stored in the United States. Only US persons can access it. And the vendor's own staff cannot reach it outside those controls. On-premise SolidWorks PDM answers this by default, which is a large part of why defense suppliers stay on it long after the pain has become obvious.

Several cloud options can answer it. Onshape Government runs in AWS GovCloud. Duro has built a practice around regulated hardware. Bild runs ITAR environments as standard, on every Professional plan, not as a bespoke enterprise add-on.

One caution worth putting in writing. A vendor telling you they are ITAR compliant means their environment can support your compliance program. It does not make you compliant. Put your export compliance officer in the evaluation early, and ask every vendor for their specific answer on data residency, personnel screening and support access.

Every figure above is a list price published by the vendor itself at the time of writing. Where a line says not published, the vendor does not post a price and sells through quotes or resellers. We deliberately left out third-party and reseller estimates for those products, because they vary widely and none of them will be your quote.

Four things to think about before signing

Ask what happens to your revision history. This question determines how a migration feels a year later. Some platforms bring across full version history with metadata. Some bring across the latest released revision and leave the rest as an archive you can search but not work in. Both are defensible. Only one of them matches what most engineers assume they are buying, so get the answer in writing.

Separate the software problem from the infrastructure problem. A vault can be slow after eight years on the same server, with an Express database near its ceiling. That is not necessarily an argument against SolidWorks PDM. Sometimes the fix is a hardware refresh and a move to full SQL Server. Ruling that out first makes the rest of the evaluation more honest, and it is a cheaper experiment than a migration.

Decide who owns administration in two years. Every option on this list has an admin burden. On-premise PDM concentrates it in one person who knows SQL and Windows Server. Cloud platforms spread a smaller amount of it across whoever owns the process. Neither is free. Pick the shape your team can actually staff, not the one that looks lightest in the demo.

Check how suppliers get data. Most teams discover late that their contract manufacturer needs current drawings. The options are usually a full seat, an email attachment, or a shared folder nobody revokes. A scoped supplier view is worth more than it looks on a feature matrix. It is the gap that most often puts the wrong revision on a shop floor.

Frequently asked questions

Is SolidWorks PDM free? PDM Standard is included with SolidWorks Professional and Premium seats on an active subscription, so there is no additional license cost for CAD users. It is not free to run. You still provide the server, the Windows and SQL environment, the backups, and the administration.

What is the difference between SolidWorks PDM Standard and Professional ? Dassault's product matrix puts multiple automated workflows under Professional, along with automated PDF and STEP creation, serial number generators, ERP import and export, content search, and WAN replication. The installation guide adds two more differences. Standard vaults run on SQL Server Express; Professional runs on full SQL Server. The Web2 client and Web API server are Professional only.

Can SolidWorks PDM manage non-SolidWorks files? It can store and version them. It does not understand their references or BOM structure the way it does for SolidWorks data. That is the most common reason teams start looking at alternatives.

Does 3DEXPERIENCE replace SolidWorks PDM? It can, and for cloud-committed teams that is Dassault's intended path. It is not an upgrade in place. The data model is different, so moving from a file-based vault to platform objects is a conversion project with its own timeline and licensing.

Do I need PLM if I already have SolidWorks PDM? Not necessarily. PDM manages CAD files and revisions. PLM manages items, BOMs, changes and suppliers across the whole product. If your BOM lives in Excel and your ECOs live in email, that is the gap PLM fills, and some platforms now cover both.

How long does it take to move off SolidWorks PDM? It depends far more on your data than on the software. A clean vault under a few hundred gigabytes with consistent part numbering can move in days to a few weeks. A vault with twenty years of history, inconsistent numbering, and unresolved duplicates is a data cleanup project first, and that is the part worth scoping honestly.

SolidWorks

-only, single site, IT already in place: stay on PDM Standard.

Workflows and automation are the problem but you want to stay with Dassault: look at PDM Professional first, and 3DEXPERIENCE if you also want the servers gone.
