Best Cloud PDM Platforms for Distributed Teams

Hardware teams used to sit in one building, close to one file server. Now engineers work from different cities, contract manufacturers are overseas, and suppliers need drawings the same day they're released. A shared drive or an on-site vault doesn't keep up. Cloud product data management fixes that by putting CAD files, revisions, BOMs, and change orders in one place everyone can reach. This guide compares four product data management platforms for distributed hardware engineering teams.

What to look for

CAD collaboration. Check whether the platform works with the CAD your team already uses. Some tools require you to switch to their own CAD. Others work with SolidWorks, Creo, NX, and more. Also check how people outside engineering can view a design. A browser viewer saves everyone from installing CAD just to look at a part.

Supplier access. Suppliers need the latest released revision, not an old PDF from someone's email. Look for a supplier portal or sharing with set permissions, so outside partners see only the files you choose.

Version control. When engineers work in different time zones, two people can edit the same file without knowing it. Look for check-in and check-out, full version history, and a clear record of who changed what.

Workflow fit. A platform only helps if people use it. Ask how long setup takes, whether you need an admin to run it, and whether change orders and approvals work the way your team already works.

The options

Bild

Bild is cloud PDM and PLM for hardware teams. It works with SolidWorks, Creo, NX, Inventor, Solid Edge, and other CAD tools, so you keep your current setup. Files, BOMs, and change orders live in one place, and there are no servers to run. Engineers can reach their files from anywhere, even without an internet connection.

For teams spread across sites, Bild has a web viewer so anyone can open a part in the browser. Suppliers get a portal with the latest revision, where they can send back DFM feedback. Custom Views let each person sort files by supplier, status, or revision without changing the folder structure for everyone else.

Cellino is one distributed team using Bild. Cellino builds hardware for manufacturing stem cells. They used Onshape for several years, then moved to SolidWorks to save on licensing costs. SolidWorks didn't come with a way to manage files across their distributed team, so they looked at options, including 3DEXPERIENCE, and chose Bild.

With Bild, Cellino doesn't need on-site servers or a VPN. People who don't use CAD can open parts and assemblies through a shared link and leave feedback without downloading anything. Before, the team had to export and package files for them. Their Senior Director of Engineering, Blair Morad, said there's virtually no time spent on admin work in Bild. Skyways is another Bild customer. Their team uses Bild to share files without packing up each assembly first. Read the Skyways case study.

Best for: Teams on SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or other desktop CAD who want cloud-based engineering collaboration without switching CAD or running servers.

Onshape

Onshape is cloud CAD with PDM built in. Everyone works in the browser on the same model, so there are no files to send back and forth. It supports branching and merging, a lot like software teams use for code, and it tracks every change.

The catch is CAD. Onshape's PDM only works with Onshape CAD. Teams on SolidWorks, Creo, or NX would need to move their design work over. Pricing is another thing to check. Onshape charges per user, and Cellino found that harder to sustain than a SolidWorks floating license as the team grew.

Best for: Teams ready to switch to Onshape as their CAD system.

3DEXPERIENCE

3DEXPERIENCE is Dassault's cloud platform. SolidWorks users can store data in it and work from a web interface, with no server to run. It can handle a lot, from PDM to broader PLM. It uses a named-user license model, so check the cost of adding people outside engineering.

It works best when someone's job is to run it. Smaller distributed teams without an admin sometimes find it takes more setup than they expected.

Best for: Larger SolidWorks or CATIA teams with staff to set up and manage the platform.

Arena PLM

Arena is cloud PLM and quality software. It manages items, BOMs, change orders, and quality records, and it has supplier and partner portals. It connects to CAD tools like SolidWorks, Altium, and Siemens NX. Arena does not store CAD files, so most teams use it alongside a separate PDM.

Best for: Teams that already have a PDM and need strong hardware product lifecycle management and quality tools.

How to choose

Start with your CAD. If your team is staying on desktop CAD, look for a platform that works with it. Next, think about who needs access outside engineering, like production, purchasing, and suppliers. Pick a tool that lets them see the right files without extra licenses or software. Then run a short trial with your real files and one real supplier. See how long it takes to get running and whether your team keeps using it.
