Autodesk Vault Alternatives: Where Inventor Teams Actually Go
Autodesk Vault is a widely deployed PDM system. Vault Basic ships with the Inventor subscription, installs quickly, and for most teams, it does the job for years. The teams that start looking around are usually the ones whose requirements have outgrown it, whether that's a second CAD tool arriving with an acquisition, engineering spread across multiple sites, or a formal change order process that now has to hold up.
These are good problems to have. Here's what teams at that point actually evaluate, Autodesk's own products included, and what each path involves.
What Vault does well
The Inventor and AutoCAD integration goes deep. File relationships, revision schemes and the way a drawing follows its model all behave the way an Autodesk user expects, because they were built by the same people. Vault Basic costs nothing extra, so there is no purchasing conversation. Workgroup and Professional give you somewhere to grow, and Professional covers item masters and change orders without leaving the stack. The reseller network is mature and easy to hire against.
So here is the honest verdict first: if you are Inventor-only, on one site, and you already have IT running Windows Server and SQL Server, stay where you are. Nothing below this line will feel like an upgrade. You will trade a system your team knows for a migration you did not need.
The rest of this is for everyone else.
The four things that push teams out
Multi-CAD is the big one. Vault is excellent inside Autodesk and thin outside it. Add SolidWorks or NX or Altium and most teams end up running two data management systems in parallel, which is worse than either one alone. This is the single most common reason a Vault shop starts looking.
Somebody owns the server forever. On-premises means a machine, a SQL database, a backup schedule and an upgrade cycle that never ends. At a lot of hardware companies that somebody was hired to design product and now spends a Friday a month on database maintenance.
Remote access. Distributed engineers hitting an on-prem vault over VPN is a specific and well-documented misery once assemblies get large. There are ways to make it less bad. They are all workarounds for an architecture that assumed everyone shared a building.
The tier ceiling. Basic gives you version control. Ask for change orders, BOM management, or a way to get a drawing to a contract manufacturer without email, and you are pricing Professional or a separate PLM purchase. The number stops resembling the bundled one you started from.
Staying inside Autodesk
Autodesk Upchain
Autodesk's cloud PDM and PLM, acquired in 2021. Browser-based, multi-CAD, and pointed directly at the gap Vault leaves. If your problem is servers and VPN rather than Autodesk itself, this is the shortest distance between where you are and where you want to be, and your existing commercial relationship carries over.
It is still a migration, not an upgrade. Different product, different data model, different UI for your engineers to learn. Ask what happens to revision history, in writing.
Autodesk Fusion Manage
The cloud PLM layer, previously Fusion Lifecycle. Strong on process, change management and connecting engineering to the rest of the business. It does not do what Vault does with CAD data, so teams run it alongside a PDM rather than instead of one. Worth knowing that Autodesk's own PDM landing page does not mention Fusion Manage at all, which tells you something about how clearly this sits in their lineup.
Leaving Autodesk
Bild
Cloud-native PDM and PLM for mechanical and multidisciplinary hardware teams. Engineers work in a desktop app or a browser. No vault server, no SQL database, no VPN.
For a Vault team the thing that matters is multi-CAD. One vault handles Inventor, SolidWorks, NX, Creo, Solid Edge, AutoCAD, Revit and Altium, plus STEP and STL, rather than one system per tool. Version control counts metadata edits, renames and moves as versions in their own right, not only file saves, which is where a lot of PDM systems quietly lose history. BOMs come off the assembly structure and sync both directions. Change orders route to named reviewers. Suppliers get a scoped portal showing current drawings and nothing else.
Published pricing is $600 a month on Basic and $1,500 a month on Professional with annual billing. Go-live runs 3 to 10 days against the 3 to 9 months typical of legacy PLM.
Where it is the wrong answer: Inventor-only and staying that way, in which case the multi-CAD argument does not apply to you and Vault's native integration is deeper. Automotive-scale configuration management and variant handling, where Teamcenter and Windchill genuinely do things Bild does not. And if the whole point is staying with Autodesk, Upchain is the more sensible move and we would rather you knew that now than after a trial.
Arena
Cloud PLM with a long history in electronics and regulated manufacturing. Genuinely strong on BOM management, change control, quality records and the paperwork that FDA and ISO 13485 work generates. If your product is a medical device and your bottleneck is audit trail rather than CAD files, Arena is a serious option and has the install base to prove it.
It is PLM-first, and CAD file handling is correspondingly lighter than a PDM-first tool. Most Arena shops pair it with something else for design data, which means you are back to two systems. Pricing is not published.
Duro
Cloud PLM with a companion PDM product covering check-in, check-out and file locking. Good on the electronics side and on component and supply chain data, which makes it a reasonable fit when the product is more electrical than mechanical. Mechanical CAD workflow is less central to it. Duro has been acquired by Altium, which is worth factoring into any roadmap conversation.
OpenBOM
Cheap, cloud, focused on BOMs and part catalogues with CAD integrations layered on. Published pricing starts at $55 per seat per month. A real improvement over spreadsheets for a small team. Not built for full revision control or release management, so it solves a narrower problem than Vault does.
Siemens Teamcenter and PTC Windchill
Enterprise PLM with PDM included. Both are more configurable than anything else on this page, particularly on configuration management, variant handling and multi-site work. Neither publishes a price.
They are also enterprise procurements: implementation cycles measured in quarters, a dedicated administrator, a consulting partner. That is the correct investment at OEM scale and the wrong one for a robotics company trying to stop overwriting files this quarter.
Onshape
Not a PDM. A cloud CAD platform with data management built into the modelling environment, so there is no vault to deploy and no way for a file to sit outside the system. Branching and merging behave more like software version control than like a check-out queue. Pricing is public at $1,500 and $2,500 per user per year.
The catch is unavoidable. Adopting Onshape means moving your modelling off Inventor, which is a far larger decision than replacing your data management. Clean if you are starting from scratch. Very hard to justify with years of Inventor history behind you.
The question that actually blocks these migrations
Every aerospace, defence and space team asks the same thing about any cloud PDM, and it is not about features: where does my technical data physically live, and who can reach it.
ITAR and EAR treat controlled technical data as an export the moment a foreign person can access it, including remotely. So the questions that matter are narrow and specific. Is the data held in US-only infrastructure. Can you prove that. Are support and engineering staff who could access the environment all US persons. Is there an access log you can hand an auditor. Can you segregate a controlled project so that the rest of the company cannot see it.
Ask every vendor on this page those five questions and expect a paper answer, not a sales answer. Onshape publishes a government offering on AWS GovCloud and writes about this openly. Arena has a GovCloud path. Autodesk will point you at their compliance documentation.

Four things to think about prior to signing
What happens to revision history. Ask this before cost and before features. Plenty of migrations move the current version of every file and flatten everything behind it. If you have eight years of Vault data, that history is often the most valuable asset you own and the hardest to recreate.
Whether the problem is Autodesk or on-premises. Those lead to different places. If you like the stack and hate the server, Upchain is the shortest path. If half your CAD is not Autodesk, you need a multi-CAD platform and the vendor's logo is beside the point.
Who administers it in month six. On-premises means somebody owns the server, the database and the upgrade path indefinitely. If that is currently an engineer doing it in the gaps between projects, count what that actually costs before you compare licence fees.
Whether suppliers can get in without seeing everything. If your contract manufacturer emails asking for the current drawing, your data management stopped at the firewall.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Autodesk Vault and Autodesk Upchain?
Vault is on-premises and built around Autodesk CAD. Upchain is cloud-based, browser-accessible and multi-CAD. Vault needs a server and a SQL database that somebody maintains. Upchain does not. Moving between them is a migration, not a version upgrade.
Is Autodesk Vault free?
Vault Basic is included with an Inventor or AutoCAD subscription at no extra cost. Workgroup and Professional are separately licensed, and Autodesk does not publish those prices. Change orders and item management require Professional.
Can Autodesk Vault manage SolidWorks files?
It can store them, but it does not understand SolidWorks assembly relationships or revision schemes the way it understands Inventor's. Multi-CAD shops using Vault typically end up running a second data management system alongside it, which is the most common reason they start looking at alternatives.
Do I need PLM if I already have Vault?
It depends what you are missing. If you need change orders, item masters and supplier collaboration, Vault Professional covers some of it and a separate PLM covers the rest. If you want design data and product data in one system, a combined cloud PDM and PLM platform removes the seam entirely.
How long does it take to move off Vault?
It depends almost entirely on data volume and how much revision history you carry across. Ask each vendor for a timeline and ask what that timeline depends on. Bild quotes 3 to 10 days to go-live. Enterprise PLM implementations are commonly quoted in months.
Where this leaves you
Inventor-only, single site, IT already in place: stay on Vault.
Servers and VPN are the problem but you want to stay with Autodesk: look at Upchain first.
